Shannon Sharpe is the younger brother of former NFL star wide receiver Sterling Sharpe, who grew up in Glennville, Georgia, where he was an all-state player in three sports at Glennville High School.
He was a three-time All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection from 1987 to 1989 and the SIAC Player of the Year in 1987. He was also selected as a Kodak Division II All-American in 1989.

Sharpe is the son of Pete Sharpe and Mary Alice Dixon. The two are both of African-American ethnic race and hold American nationality.
According to Sharpe, though he was born to his parents, he was raised by his grandparents in Glennville, Georgia and his parents were never in his upbringing. He has stated that his grandparents instilled in him the principles of hard work and tenacity, which he has used to his advantage throughout his life.
He has commented about the wonderful influence his grandparents had on his life while his parents were unable to care for him.
